Overview

The majority of contracts that are traded in the financial market are over-the-counter (OTC) swaps and exchange-traded futures with the remainder generally being the more vanilla options and caps. Futures contracts have become an integral part of derivative trading in the NEM with significant growth in traded volumes being experienced as market participants begin to appreciate their value as a risk management tool. Other financial products related to environmental trading regimes are developing, as the requirements for environmental compliance activities increase in the NEM.

This practical and interactive one day workshop is designed to engage participants in deriving hedging outcomes using a variety of financial instruments as a way of understanding how the market operates. The program will draw upon the wealth of experience of the presenter, an ex-practitioner with experience in trading financial products in electricity markets.

Outcome:

Participating in this workshop will equip participants to:

  • Develop models for spot and forward prices
  • Understand the behaviour of the forward curve
  • Calibrate models for describing electricity spot and forward prices
  • Perform fair valuation of a range of standard and non-standard derivatives in the electricity market
  • Quantify the risk of a portfolio with exposure to electricity markets
  • Develop a hedging position to achieve a desired portfolio risk profile
  • Assessing electricity trading strategies
  • Appreciate the influences of the CPRS on trading in electricity markets
  • Discuss how trading strategies are constrained by the properties of an emerging market
