Chairman's Message

"Welcome to AFMA's website. AFMA is the industry association for Australia’s wholesale banking and financial markets representing over 140 entities across the industry.

Our members include Australian and foreign banks, leading brokers, securities companies, state government treasury corporations, fund managers, traders in electricity and other specialised markets and industry service providers. Our members link Australia to the leading financial centres around the world.

The financial markets clearly play a crucial role in the Australian economy and AFMA, in collectively representing the industry, assists the efficient operation of markets that currently turn over on average $480 billion each working day. Two thirds of this volume is in non-exchange traded financial products, the over-the-counter (OTC) market, where AFMA manages the documentation and protocols that enable these markets to perform efficiently. AFMA places enormous importance on maintaining high standards of competence and professionalism and provides accreditation for OTC market participants.

AFMA recognises the importance of efficient regulation to inspire investor confidence in our markets, and in this regard plays a leading role in providing industry input to the government and regulators on public policy matters relevant to the financial markets. We seek to ensure that government regulation of the financial sector is firm enough to inspire investor confidence yet flexible enough to allow the markets to grow to their full potential.

Chairman, Australian Financial Markets Association

Australia as a Financial Centre - How to Achieve Our Potential

The Australian Financial Markets Association (AFMA) agrees with the Australian Financial Centre Forum's recommendations in its Report released today, "Australia as a Financial Centre", and strongly encourages the Government to accept the recommendations and to implement them in a timely manner.

A competitive, resilient and efficient financial system is central to a successful economy. Australia is well served in this regard but more needs to be done to achieve our full potential. The Report recognises many of the problems encountered by financial services providers and presents a set of measured actions to deliver the international business, quality employment and positive client service outcomes we should reasonably expect from a competitive financial system.

2009 Australian Financial Markets Report (AFMR)

Australia's financial markets feel the effects of the global financial crisis

The impact of the global financial crisis on Australia's financial markets is measured as overall turnover shows a fall of 16.8%, the first decrease in nine years. However, turnover statistics varied widely across products and sectors as the impacts of the flight to quality and funding constraints were felt over the past 12 months.

As well as a wealth of data on financial markets, the Report contains expert commentaries on trends in each product surveyed and reports on both OTC and Exchange Traded markets.
